Typically, the moving coil actuators are designed to minimize the moving mass and do not have a built-in bearing. However, in the case of the NCC12-60-100-2AB, an air-bearing system was integrated to provide stiffness and eliminate friction. The motor coil was wound on an aluminum bobbin to maximize the power that can be dissipated. Still, the bobbin was modified to limit the common drag forces on bobbins made from conductive materials. The result was an actuator that had a high force and high-speed capability.

The actuator is capable of a continuous force of 100 lbs [454 N] and a peak force of 300 lbs [1360 N] at a duty cycle of 10% (i.e., 1 second on and 9 seconds off). A mass of just over 6.0 lbs [2.8 kg] allows for a maximal acceleration. The actuator has a stroke of 1.2 in [30 mm] and a Force Constant of about 10 lbs/amp [45 N/amp]. This relatively large stroke allows for a greater range of applications requiring greater strokes and high accelerations.
